Project Synopsis:
How We Cut This Building's Energy Consumption by 50% -- Commercial properties account for nearly 1/5th of the United State’s total energy consumption. While ‘green’ building practices are very important for new facilities, restoring and renovating existing structures offer a much larger potential for energy savings, and reduction of the country’s foreign energy dependence. This project involves an “energy overhaul” renovation of a typical, older office building. No major changes were made to the exterior structure of the project. The client’s goals were quite straight forward: incorporate systems upgrades that have a realistic financial payback, while reducing the facility’s energy and water consumption by a minimum of half. Within are the details on how this was not only accomplished but also surpassed our benchmarks, setting a new standard for realistic energy renovations. The facility is expected to be certified both ENERGYSTAR and LEED Platinum for O&M, under the new rules for existing buildings. The facility was recently awarded by the EPA a national award for Small Business Innovation for energy.
