Project Synopsis:
In response to the design community’s needs, the Portland chapter of the American Institute of Architects moved from a small downtown office to a former 5000 SF art gallery in the Pearl District. Built in 1888 and one of Portland’s oldest structures, the chapter’s new home was a former stable and carriage house in the city’s industrial district. The larger facility houses all of the AIA’s administrative offices and includes expanded gallery space. The 5000 SF first floor includes an open office space, with desks for 6 AIA employees. Adjacent to the office space is a meeting room and a board room with full teleconference capabilities. Storage, the kitchenette, restrooms and shower are located in the core of the building and separate the office space and gallery area. In the rear of the gallery area is the warming kitchen, which can be used as a prep area for events. The basement is primarily designed as mechanical areas, and has approximately 300 SF of storage space for employee use. The relocation process and design work was guided by a four member steering committee that established three guiding design principals for the new space: • Design a high performance space that will support a healthy and happy staff and adapt to changing needs over time • Design a sustainable space that demonstrates how professional collaboration can achieve elevated environmental performance within a limited budget • Design a beautiful space that will enhance the Chapter’s ability to serve the membership and educate the public about architecture, architects, and our role in shaping our community
