Project Synopsis:
Impluvium is personal. It is a building inspired by my travels and the many cities all over the world in which I have lived. I grew up on Capitol Hill and it has always been my dream to build my own home, a landmark, something that is grand and modest at the same time. As our population grows in the face of global climate change and higher energy prices, it is clear that cities’ urban cores need to grow gracefully to accommodate our higher densities. Impluvium is my version of what is the highest and best use of the land both from an economist’s point of view and from that of a philosophical builder harking Kant’s Categorical Imperative, that one should build only in such a way as for it to become a universal standard. Impluvium is still a work in progress, while my building has been occupied for 6 months, rain-water harvesting, solar panels, heat recovery controls, and other aspects of the building have yet to be finalized.
